For most detailers, a new customer takes real effort: they have to find you, trust you and book. A repeat customer costs almost nothing. Yet many detailers do a great job, take payment, and never ask the customer to come back.
How often cars actually need you
Use real intervals when you set up reminders:
- Maintenance washes: every 2 to 4 weeks for coated cars, which is the common guidance from coating makers such as IGL, and every 4 to 8 weeks for most other cars.
- Coating boosters: often recommended every 3 to 4 months, with a deep decontamination every 6 to 12 months.
- Full details: two to four times a year for most drivers.
- Coating renewal: detailers commonly see customers return every 2 to 5 years, depending on the product.
Every one of those is a booking you can schedule now, instead of hoping the customer remembers you.
Ask at the right moment
The best time to offer regular service is right after the detail, while the customer is looking at a car that feels new. Say it in person, and put it in the message you send afterwards:
Most of my customers keep it looking like this with a maintenance wash every month. Want me to put you down for the 14th? Same time works for me.
Offering a specific date works far better than “let me know when you need me”.
Offer a simple maintenance plan
- A maintenance wash every 2, 4 or 6 weeks.
- A small saving compared with booking one at a time.
- A fixed day, so they never have to think about it.
Coated cars are ideal for a plan: regular maintenance keeps the coating performing, and it protects the work they already paid you for.
Set up reminders by hand (1 hour, once)
- Keep a spreadsheet with: name, phone, car, last service, what you did, next due date.
- Fill in the next due date after every job using the intervals above.
- Every Monday, sort by next due date and text everyone due in the coming two weeks.
Hi Maria, it’s been about six weeks since we did your Tesla, so it’s due a maintenance wash. I’ve got Thursday at 10 or Saturday at 9 near you. Want either?
Give two specific options. It is easier to pick one than to plan from scratch.
A thank-you that brings them back
After a big job like a coating, send a short thank-you a week later with care tips (“wait a week before the first wash, avoid automatic car washes”). It feels personal, shows expertise, and keeps you in their phone for the next booking.
Ask for the review in the same message
Happy repeat customers write the best reviews. Add your review link to the first follow-up after each job. See reviews for detailers for the exact wording.
The short version
- Offer a specific next date right after the detail.
- Keep one sheet of every customer and their next due date.
- Text everyone who is due, every Monday, with two time options.
- Send a thank-you with care tips after big jobs.
