How many Google reviews does a detailing business need?

Updated October 17, 2026 · 5 min read · By the Xvelopers team

The short answer

There is no magic number. You need more recent reviews than the detailers people compare you with, a rating of 4 stars or higher, and new reviews every month. In BrightLocal’s 2026 survey, 68% of consumers said they will only use a business rated 4 stars or higher, and 31% want 4.5 or higher.

Detailers often ask how many reviews they need before customers take them seriously. The research gives a clear answer on rating and recency, and a practical answer on the number: you need more than the detailers you are compared with.

What customers look at in 2026

From BrightLocal’s Local Consumer Review Survey 2026:

  • 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses, and 41% say they always do, up from 29% in 2025.
  • 68% will only use a business rated 4 stars or higher, and 31% want 4.5 or higher. Both figures rose sharply in a year.
  • 83% of people who were asked to leave a review went on to write one.

Recent reviews matter too. Survey write-ups report that around three in four consumers look for reviews from the last three months. A profile with 60 reviews, the newest from last year, looks like a business that has slowed down.

Work out your own target (10 minutes)

  1. Search “mobile detailing near me” and “car detailing near me” from two or three areas you serve. Use your phone with location on, or ask a friend in another neighborhood.
  2. Write down the rating and review count of the top three detailers each time.
  3. Your target is to pass the highest count you see, with a rating of 4.5 or higher, and to add new reviews every month.

How to get your review link

Google has moved this button over time, so older guides may send you to the wrong place. Google’s current instructions are:

  1. Open your Business Profile.
  2. Select Read reviews, then Get more reviews.
  3. Choose Copy to copy your link. On a computer, you can also save a QR code (Google only offers the QR code in a computer browser).

Save the link in your phone’s notes so you can paste it in seconds. Print the QR code on a small card to leave on the dashboard after each detail. Our free review QR code generator makes the card for you, with your logo.

The routine that works, by hand

  1. At the job: take a great “after” photo of the car.
  2. Within an hour of finishing: text the customer the photo and a short message (below).
  3. Three days later, if there is no review: one friendly reminder.
  4. When the review comes in: reply the same day, by name.
Hi James, thanks for having me out today. Here’s your car, looking better than new! If you have a minute, a quick Google review really helps a small business like mine: [link]
Hi James, just a quick reminder in case it got buried. No worries if you’re busy, it only takes a minute: [link]. Thanks again!

The photo matters. It is personal, it reminds them how good the car looked, and it makes the request feel like a thank-you rather than a chore.

Track it in a simple sheet

A spreadsheet with these columns is enough: date, customer, phone, car, job, request sent, reminder sent, reviewed (yes or no). Glance at it each evening and send any reminders due. It also becomes your customer list for repeat bookings.

What not to do

Do not offer discounts or freebies in exchange for reviews, and do not only ask customers you know are happy. Google’s content policies do not allow incentives or selectively asking for positive reviews, and those reviews can be removed. See getting more reviews without breaking the rules.

Reply fast

Expectations are rising: in the same 2026 survey, 19% of consumers expected a reply the same day, and 32% by the next day. A short, personal reply within a day is enough. See how to reply to Google reviews.

Questions people ask

Do old reviews still count?

They count, but recent ones carry more weight with customers. A profile whose newest review is a year old looks inactive, even with a high total.

Can I offer a discount for a review?

No. Google does not allow incentives for reviews, and reviews gained that way can be removed. Ask every customer instead, and make it easy.
