How to get more Google reviews without breaking the rules

The short answer

Ask every customer, right after the job, with a direct link that opens your Google review form. Make the request personal and short. Do not offer rewards for reviews, and do not only ask happy customers while steering unhappy ones elsewhere. Google does not allow either, and the FTC’s 2024 rule on reviews targets fake and suppressed reviews.

Most businesses with too few reviews do good work. They simply do not ask, or they ask once in a while instead of every time. The research shows how much asking matters, and below is the exact routine to do it by hand.

Why reviews matter more every year

From BrightLocal’s Local Consumer Review Survey 2026:

  • 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses.
  • 68% will only use a business rated 4 stars or higher, up from 55% in 2025. 31% want 4.5 or higher.
  • 83% of people who were asked for a review wrote one, and 28% say they will always leave a review if asked.

For home services specifically, Scorpion’s 2026 survey of 2,000 homeowners found 87% will not hire a business below 4 stars, while 67% of business leaders said they struggle to collect reviews consistently. The gap is not quality. It is asking.

Step 1: get your review link (5 minutes)

Per Google’s current instructions:

  1. Open your Business Profile.
  2. Select Read reviews, then Get more reviews.
  3. Choose Copy. On a computer, you can also save a QR code.

Save the link somewhere you can paste it in seconds, such as a text replacement shortcut on your phone (type “rvw” and it becomes your link).

Step 2: ask at the right moment

The best time is right after the job, while the customer is looking at the result. A request a week later gets far fewer replies.

Step 3: make it personal

A short, personal message beats a generic email blast. Use their name, mention the job, and include a photo of the finished work. The photo turns the request into a thank-you:

Hi Sarah, thanks for having us out today. Here’s your new patio, enjoy it this weekend! If you have a minute, a quick Google review would really help us: [link]

Text is usually best, if the customer has agreed to hear from you that way. Otherwise, email works.

Step 4: one follow-up, then stop

If there is no review after three or four days, send one friendly reminder:

Hi Sarah, just a quick reminder in case it got buried. It only takes a minute: [link]. Thanks again for choosing us!

Stop after one reminder.

Step 5: say thank you when it arrives

Reply to the review publicly the same day or the next, and, for a big job, send a short personal thank-you text. People remember businesses that notice them.

Track it in one sheet

Columns: date, customer, job, request sent, reminder sent, reviewed. Check it each evening. Ten minutes a day is enough for most small businesses.

Other ways to ask

  • A small card with your QR code left after the job. Make one free with our review QR code generator.
  • The review link in your invoice or receipt email.
  • A sticker with the QR code inside your van or on your counter.

Two things that break the rules

  • No rewards. Discounts, gift cards or prize draws for reviews are not allowed under Google’s content policies, and those reviews can be removed.
  • No review gating. Asking for a star rating first and sending only happy customers to Google is selective solicitation, which Google does not allow. Everyone gets the same link. Adding “Something not right? Just reply and tell us” is fine.

The FTC’s 2024 rule on reviews and testimonials bans fake reviews and suppressing negative ones, and allows civil penalties. Reviews must come from real customers, posted from their own accounts.

Questions people ask

What is review gating?

Asking customers to rate you first, then sending only the happy ones to Google. Google does not allow it. Every customer should get the same link.

Can I write reviews for customers or post them myself?

No. Reviews must be written and posted by the customer from their own Google account. Anything else counts as a fake review.
