Why isn’t my business showing on Google Maps?

The short answer

Search your exact business name first. If you do not appear at all, your profile may be unverified, suspended or duplicated. If you appear for your name but not for searches like “plumber near me”, it is a ranking problem: Google is choosing other businesses on relevance, distance and prominence, and you need to strengthen all three.

You know you do good work, but when you search for what you do, other businesses show up on the map and you do not. The fix depends on which of two problems you have, so start by finding out. This is more urgent than it used to be: BrightLocal’s 2026 survey found that 45% of consumers now use AI tools like ChatGPT to find local businesses, and those tools lean on the same profile, reviews and website information Google uses. If Google cannot see you clearly, AI tools often cannot either.

Step 1: search your exact business name

Search Google for your business name exactly as it appears on your profile, on your phone and on a computer.

  • Your profile does not appear at all: the problem is the profile itself. It may be unverified, suspended, or split across duplicate listings.
  • It appears for your name, but not for searches like “plumber near me”: your profile exists, but Google is choosing other businesses. That is a ranking problem.

If your profile is missing

  • Unverified: sign in to your Business Profile and check verification is complete. Follow any steps Google shows.
  • Suspended: Google usually shows a notice. Common causes are extra keywords in the business name, an address that does not meet Google’s rules, or a category that does not match the business. Fix the cause before you appeal; appeals can now include supporting evidence such as a business license or a photo of your signage.
  • Duplicates: two listings split your reviews and signals. Search Maps for your name and phone number, and ask Google to remove or merge any duplicate.

Google’s guidelines for representing your business say your name must match your real-world name. “Smith Roofing” is fine. “Smith Roofing Best Roofer Dallas” can get you suspended.

If you are there, but not near the top

Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. Check each one:

  • Relevance: is your primary category the most specific one available? Is every service listed? Does your description say plainly what you do and where?
  • Distance: are your address or service areas correct? Does your website have pages for the main areas you serve?
  • Prominence: how do your reviews compare with the top three? How recent is your newest review? Do you reply? When did you last add photos or a post?

Step 2: check from your customers’ locations

Map results depend on where the search is made. You may rank well near your own address and not at all across town. A simple manual check:

  1. Pick three or four places you want work from.
  2. Ask someone there to search your main service plus “near me” and send you a screenshot, or search on your phone when you are in those areas.
  3. Write down your position each time in a sheet, and check again monthly.

What to fix first

  1. Make sure the profile is verified, accurate and not duplicated.
  2. Set the most specific primary category, and list every service.
  3. Set your service areas or address correctly.
  4. Ask every customer for a review, and reply to every one.
  5. Add photos and posts weekly, so the profile looks active.
  6. Make sure your website uses the same name, address and phone number, with a page for each main service.

The Google Business Profile checklist walks through each step.

Questions people ask

Does paying for Google Ads help my Maps ranking?

No. Ads appear separately and do not change where your business ranks in the free map results.

Should I put keywords in my business name?

No. Google’s guidelines say your business name must match your real-world name. Adding keywords can get your profile suspended.
